Mr. Martin Broadhurst, Royal Aeronautical Society, UK
OBE MA C.DIR F.RAeS F.IOD

Martin Broadhurst was educated at William Hulme’s School and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He joined Marshall Aerospace and Defence as a Management Trainee in 1975, and following a number of roles with the company, including Production Director and Director of Programmes, was appointed as Chief Executive in February 1996. During his time as Chief Executive he served on the Group Holdings Board and was Chairman of a number of subsidiary companies.

Following retirement from his role as Chief Executive of Marshall, he was appointed, during the early part of 2011, as Chairman of the Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME) and was elected to the Governing Council of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Martin served as President of the Society for 2015/2016 and was became Chairman in 2017.

Martin was appointed as a non-executive director of Ultra Electronics Holdings plc. in July 2012 where he chairs the remuneration committee and serves on the audit and nomination committees.

Martin has served as Chair of the European Aerospace and Defence Association and is a former treasurer of A|D|S. He has also served as Chairman of the Cambridgeshire Training and Enterprise Council and as Chairman of Connexions.

Martin was awarded the O.B.E. in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the Aerospace Industry and is a Freeman of the City of London. He qualified as a Chartered Director in 2006.

 

Prof. Chris Gerada, the University of Nottingham, UK

Prof. Chris Gerada, Vice Provost for Research. He obtained his PhD in Numerical Modelling of Electrical Machines from the University of Nottingham, UK in 2005. He subsequently worked as a researcher at the University of Nottingham on high performance electrical drives and on the design and modelling of electromagnetic actuators for aerospace applications. He was appointed as Lecturer in Electrical Machines in 2008, an Associate Professor in 2011 and Professor in 2013. His core research interests include the design and modelling of high performance electric drives and machines. Prof. Gerada established and is the director of the Cummins Innovation Centre and has also led a number of major research consortiums and centres (GE Aviation UTSP, Advance Propulsion Centre, Actuation2115). 

He holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Electrical Machines is also the past Chair of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Electrical Machines Technical Committee and is an Associate Editor for the Transactions in Industry Applications.

Prof. Chris Gerada has led a number of major programmes in more electric aircraft as part of Clean Sky, Clean Sky 2 and other national and European funded programmes. These have seen the development of electric drives with record-breaking performance including high reliability primary actuators, Green Taxiing drives and starter generators. He is currently leading a number of research and development projects on hybrid- and all-electric aircraft propulsion.

 

 


Dr. Amit Gupta, Rolls-Royce, UK

Amit Gupta holds a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Roorkee and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from National University of Singapore (NUS). During 2000-12, he worked for Bechtel Corporation, Samsung Heavy Industries, Delphi Automotive Systems and Vestas Wind Systems. Since August 2012, he has been Chief of Electrical Capability Group at Rolls-Royce Singapore Pte Ltd.  He is Director of the Electrical Programme at Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate lab.

To date he has been granted 22 patents and filed another 21 patents. He has also published more than 70 papers in international conferences and journals.  He is an Adjunct Professor with ECE, NUS and EEE, NTU.  He holds a six sigma Green Belt Certificate from Delphi Automotive Systems and trained in six sigma Black Belt techniques through Vestas Wind Systems.

He received 2016 IEEE R10 Industry-Academia collaboration award for developing world class electrical R&T lab EPSIL@N. He was runner up in 2015 Rolls-Royce Engineering & Technology (E&T) Technical Awards. He is a recipient of Vestas Innovation excellence award for being top 5 innovators of Vestas Global Research. He is a recipient of the Prize paper from the IEEE Industrial Applications Society’s (IAS) - Industrial Power Converter Committee (IPCC) for 2005.

He is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transitions on Power Electronics and plays an active role in organizing electrical power engineering conferences in Asia. He is Fellow of the IET and a Chartered Engineer from Engineering Council UK, and a Senior Member of IEEE.

 

 

 

 


Prof. Zongxia JIAO, Beihang University, China

Prof. Zongxia Jiao received his Ph.D degree in Mechanical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 1991. He was with Beihang University (BUAA) as a postdoctor from 1991 to 1993. Since then, he has been an Associate Professor and Professor of BUAA. He was a Guest Scientist of the Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, Germany in 2000. He is currently the Dean of the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering, the Director of the Science and Technology on Aircraft Control National Key Laboratory, and the Director of the Organization of Aviation Utility System Engineering, Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has also served as the Deputy Director of the Organization of Fluid Transmission and Control, and the Standing Council Member of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.

Prof. Jiao is the Chief Scientist of National Key Basic Research Project (973). He is the recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and the National Excellent Scientific and Technological Workers Award. He is honored as the Cheung Kong Chair Professor granted by the Ministry of Education.

In recent years, Prof. Jiao has devoted to the researches on fluid power transmission and electro-hydraulic servo control of aircrafts, and conducted systematic investigation on vibration of hydraulic system of aircrafts, electro-hydraulic servo control equipments, and more electrical aircraft and actuation system. He has made significant achievements that have been implemented into the third/fourth generation aircrafts, and unmanned aerial vehicles. As the Principal Investigator, he has won two National, and one National Science and Technology Progress Award. He has been granted 33 patents, and published more than 200 papers in internationally recognized journals and referred conferences.

 

 

 

 

Dr. Yuanli KANG, BASTRI of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), China

Dr. Kang had over 15 years of experience in aircraft system development and product design, specializing in aircraft power supply system: Starter/Generator control system, Power conversion and power distribution system design. Her major is power system, electric machine and power electronics respectively for her bachelor, Master and Doctor Degree. Since 2013, she has been leading the efforts for more electric aircraft (MEA) system design and integration, including key technology studies on electrical power, WIPS, ECS, flight control system etc., and development of the tools and methodologies for system integration. She is proud of her team that she established in 2013 when she joined COMAC, happy to work with all talents who appreciate the same value as her.

Dr. Kang holds an MBA in Rotman Business School, University of Toronto, one of the most recognized MBA programs around the world.

 

 

Dr. Susan X. Ying Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), China

Dr. Ying devoted over 35 years in the aerospace industry, with the last three years as the Chief Integration Officer of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). In 2013, she retired from the Boeing Company as the Director of Research and Technology. Before joining Boeing, Ying taught at universities and directed research in the DOE Research Labs and NASA Ames Research Center. Demonstrating success both at individual and team levels, she has been the recipient of many honors, including the People’s Republic of China Friendship Award, Asian American Engineer of the Year Award, Boeing Professional Excellence Award from the CTO, and NASA Group Achievement Award. Recognized as a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), Dr. Ying is the President of the International Council of Aeronautical Science (ICAS) and an executive member serving on the Aerospace Council of the SAE International. She also was an inaugural member in the NASA Advisory Council Innovation and Technology Committee. Dr. Ying holds a Commercial Pilot License and is a FAA-Certified Flight Instructor. She received her PHD and MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University and BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University. As a true believer in life-long learning, Dr. Ying has also received executive education from the Kellogg School of Business Administration, Wharton Business School, and Brookings Institute in Brussels.
